AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets vs People Also Ask: The Difference

AI Overviews vs featured snippets is a question I get constantly. I cover the broader picture in my complete guide to AI Overviews, AEO, and GEO in Pakistan, but business owners keep asking me the same follow-up question. There is an AI Overview at the top of the page, then a “People Also Ask” box further down, and sometimes a plain featured snippet too. Are these the same thing? They are not, and the difference actually matters for what you should build.
Featured Snippets: The Original Quick Answer
A featured snippet is a short block of text, usually pulled word for word from one specific page, shown above the normal search results with a link back to that page. It has been around for years and it is still what most voice assistants, Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa, read aloud when someone asks a spoken question. If you want your business to be the answer someone hears when they ask their phone a question, a featured snippet is still the format that gets read aloud most often, not an AI Overview.
AI Overviews: A Synthesized Answer From Several Sources
An AI Overview is different in a fundamental way. Instead of pulling text from one page, it generates a new answer by summarizing several sources at once, usually two or three, and it shows small link icons pointing to where that information came from. It sits at the very top of the page, above even the featured snippet position, and increasingly it is showing up for commercial and local queries too, not just simple factual ones. Google has also started testing AI Overviews inside the People Also Ask box itself, which means the boundaries between these features are blurring further.
People Also Ask: A Different Kind of Real Estate
People Also Ask is a box of related questions that expands when clicked, most often powered by featured snippets pulled from other pages. It reveals genuinely useful information about what people are actually curious about around your topic, and it is one of the best free sources of real question phrasing for planning content, since every question in that box is a real thing people search for.
AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets: Why the Difference Matters
The three formats reward slightly different things. Featured snippets and voice search reward a short, self-contained, precisely worded answer to one specific question. AI Overviews reward broader page quality, sourcing, and structure, since the AI is deciding whether your whole page is trustworthy enough to summarize from. People Also Ask rewards covering the genuinely related questions around your main topic, not just the primary one. The good news is that one well-built page can realistically appear across all three at once, the same content, structured with clear question-based headings, tends to feed all of them simultaneously.
How to Structure Content for All Three at Once
- Use the exact question as a heading. An H2 or H3 phrased as the real question, “What is entity based SEO,” not a vague topic label.
- Answer immediately and completely in the first few sentences, roughly 40 to 50 words, before adding supporting detail. This is the single most important habit for snippet and AI Overview extraction alike.
- Cover the genuinely related questions, not just the main one, since this is exactly what feeds the People Also Ask box.
- Keep paragraphs short. Dense blocks of text are harder for any of these systems to extract cleanly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to target these three formats separately?
No. The same well-structured, question-led content tends to feed all three, since they share the same underlying preference for clear, direct, well-sourced answers.
Which one drives the most actual traffic to my website?
Featured snippets still typically drive more click-through traffic than AI Overviews, since AI Overviews often answer the question fully enough that people never click through at all. This is why I track mentions, not just clicks, which I cover in my guide to checking your AI search visibility.
Is it worth optimizing for People Also Ask specifically?
Yes, mainly as a research tool. The questions that appear there are genuine, real search phrasing, and building content that answers them thoroughly tends to help your broader AI Overview and snippet visibility too.
