Five Technical SEO Mistakes Small Business Websites Make
Most small business owners never look at the technical side of their website, and I understand why. It is invisible, unglamorous, and does not show up when you glance at your homepage. But technical SEO problems are often the single biggest reason a well written page still fails to rank. Here are the five mistakes I find most often when I audit a new client’s website.
A website Google cannot fully crawl
Some websites unintentionally block parts of themselves from Google through a misconfigured robots.txt file or broken internal links that lead nowhere. If Google cannot crawl a page, it does not matter how good the content on it is. I check this first on every audit, because it is the kind of problem that quietly wastes months of otherwise good work.
Missing or incomplete schema markup
Schema markup tells Google exactly what kind of business you are, what services you offer, and where you operate. Many WordPress sites either have no schema at all or have generic schema left over from a theme demo that was never updated. I have seen sites still carrying schema for a sample business that has nothing to do with the actual owner.
Mobile page speed that has never been checked
Most searches in Pakistan happen on a phone, often on a slower connection than what a website was tested on. A homepage that loads quickly on a laptop in an office can take eight or nine seconds to load on a budget phone with a patchy connection, and Google notices that gap.
Duplicate or thin content across pages
I regularly find location pages that are copies of each other with only the city name changed, sometimes not even changed consistently. Google can tell when pages are near duplicates, and it will only rank one of them, if that.
No real internal linking structure
Pages that exist in isolation, with no links pointing to them from anywhere else on the site, are much harder for Google to find and trust. A clear internal linking structure, connecting your blog posts to your service pages and your service pages to each other, does a lot of quiet work that most business owners never think about.
These five mistakes are just a starting point. My complete technical SEO Pakistan guide covers the full picture, including site speed, schema, and what has changed with AI Overviews.
