The Role of Internal Linking in Technical SEO
Internal linking, the links connecting pages within your own website, is one of the more underused technical SEO tools available to a small business, largely because it does not require any new content, only a smarter connection between what already exists.
How internal links help Google understand your site
When one page links to another using clear, descriptive text, it tells Google something specific about the relationship between those two pages. A blog post about local SEO linking to your Local SEO service page, using that actual phrase, reinforces what that service page is genuinely about.
Why orphaned pages are a common problem
Pages with no internal links pointing to them are harder for Google to find, crawl regularly, or understand the importance of. I regularly find valuable pages on client sites sitting completely disconnected from the rest of the site’s structure, quietly underperforming as a result.
Passing authority to the pages that matter most
Internal linking also helps distribute the authority your strongest pages have built toward pages you actually want to rank, like service pages or high value blog posts, rather than letting that authority sit unused on a single popular page.
A simple habit that makes a real difference
Every time I publish a new blog post, I look for at least two or three genuinely relevant existing pages to link to, and I go back to update older content with links to new posts where it makes sense. This ongoing habit does more for a site’s structure than most one time technical fixes.
